Module 13 Assignment: Cost Behavior, Budgeting, and Activity-Based Costing
For this assignment, you will apply the concepts learned in Module 13 to analyze cost behavior, prepare budgets, conduct variance analysis, and implement activity-based costing (ABC). You can continue using the accounting simulator from our website, MS Excel, or an inexpensive accounting software if you have access to it.
Assignment Tasks
- Cost Behavior and Cost-Volume-Profit (CVP) Analysis:
- Identify and classify the following costs as fixed, variable, or mixed:
- Rent: $10,000 per month
- Direct materials: $5 per unit
- Salaries: $50,000 per year
- Utilities: $2,000 per month + $0.05 per unit
- Calculate the break-even point in units for a product with the following information:
- Selling price per unit: $50
- Variable cost per unit: $30
- Total fixed costs: $40,000
- Determine the contribution margin per unit and the contribution margin ratio based on the provided data.
- Identify and classify the following costs as fixed, variable, or mixed:
- Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Prepare an operating budget for the upcoming quarter, including the following components:
- Revenue Budget: Estimate sales of 10,000 units at a selling price of $50 per unit.
- Production Budget: Estimate production needs based on the sales forecast and desired ending inventory of 1,000 units. Assume beginning inventory is 500 units.
- Direct Materials Budget: Estimate the quantity and cost of direct materials needed for production. Each unit requires 2 pounds of materials at $5 per pound.
- Direct Labor Budget: Estimate the labor hours and cost needed for production. Each unit requires 0.5 labor hours at $20 per hour.
- Manufacturing Overhead Budget: Estimate overhead costs of $30,000 for the quarter.
- Selling and Administrative Expense Budget: Estimate expenses of $40,000 for the quarter.
- Conduct a variance analysis for the following items, comparing budgeted amounts to actual amounts:
- Revenue: Budgeted $500,000, Actual $480,000
- COGS: Budgeted $300,000, Actual $310,000
- Selling and Administrative Expenses: Budgeted $40,000, Actual $35,000
- Provide a brief explanation for each variance and suggest possible corrective actions.
- Prepare an operating budget for the upcoming quarter, including the following components:
- Activity-Based Costing (ABC):
- Identify three activities involved in the production process of a product. For each activity, identify a suitable cost driver and estimate the total cost:
- Machine Setup: $20,000, Cost Driver: Number of setups
- Quality Inspection: $15,000, Cost Driver: Number of inspections
- Material Handling: $10,000, Cost Driver: Hours of labor
- Allocate the activity costs to two products (Product A and Product B) based on the following data:
- Product A: 10 setups, 8 inspections, 100 labor hours
- Product B: 5 setups, 12 inspections, 200 labor hours
- Calculate the total cost allocated to each product and determine the cost per unit if Product A produces 500 units and Product B produces 300 units.
- Identify three activities involved in the production process of a product. For each activity, identify a suitable cost driver and estimate the total cost:
Submission Instructions
Compile your cost classifications, break-even analysis, contribution margin calculations, operating budget, variance analysis, and ABC calculations into a single document. Submit your document in PDF format via the course submission portal.
Additional Activities
- Discussion Post: Share your experience in the course forum, detailing any challenges you faced during the assignment and how you overcame them. Provide feedback on your classmates’ posts.
- Peer Review: Review at least two of your classmates’ submissions and provide constructive feedback. Focus on the accuracy of the calculations, the completeness of the budgets, and the clarity of the analysis.
Due Date: One week after completing this module.
