Module 7: Practice Activity and Study Guide

Practice Activity

To reinforce your understanding of the key concepts covered in Module 7, complete the following practice activities. These activities will help you apply what you’ve learned and ensure you are prepared for more advanced topics.

Activity 1: Taxation and Reporting for U.S. Employees Abroad

Research the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) and the Foreign Tax Credit (FTC). Prepare a summary report explaining the eligibility criteria, benefits, and how to claim these exclusions/credits. Include examples to illustrate your points.

Instructions:

  • Identify the eligibility criteria for the FEIE and FTC.
  • Explain the steps to claim these exclusions and credits.
  • Provide examples of how the FEIE and FTC can reduce the tax liability for U.S. employees working abroad.

Activity 2: Compliance with Foreign Payroll Laws

Choose two countries and research their payroll laws regarding tax withholding, social security contributions, and labor regulations. Compare and contrast these laws with those of the United States. Create a comparison table to summarize your findings.

Instructions:

  • Research the payroll laws of two countries of your choice.
  • Compare these laws with U.S. payroll laws.
  • Create a table to highlight the key differences and similarities.

Activity 3: Employment Eligibility Verification for Aliens in the U.S.

Simulate the process of completing Form I-9 for an alien working in the U.S. Outline the steps for the employee and the employer, and describe the acceptable documents that can be used for verification. Additionally, explain how E-Verify can be used in this process.

Instructions:

  • Describe the steps for completing Form I-9 for an alien employee.
  • List the acceptable documents for identity and employment authorization verification.
  • Explain the E-Verify process and its benefits.

Activity 4: Tax Withholding for Resident and Nonresident Aliens

Using the provided scenarios, determine the correct tax withholding for resident and nonresident aliens. Calculate the federal income tax withholding for each scenario, considering any applicable tax treaties.

Scenarios:

  • Scenario 1: A resident alien earns $50,000 annually. Calculate the federal income tax withholding using Form W-4.
  • Scenario 2: A nonresident alien earns $60,000 annually. Calculate the federal income tax withholding at the flat rate of 30%, considering any applicable tax treaties.
